Digital transformation initiatives consult security teams too late to have any meaningful impact, a new study commissioned by technology firm Dell revealed.

The study, undertaken by Dimensional Research, showed that 76% of the 631 IT decision makers surveyed felt they were not consulted early enough to produce effective results on their firms’ digital transformation projects.

Respondents from the U.S., U.K., Germany, Australia, Scandinavia and the Benelux region reported that their companies had active projects in mobile, cloud technology and the Internet of Things (IoT). Ninety seven percent said they had ongoing initiatives at the time of the research.

Additionally, 85% of those surveyed said they believe they were bypassed because their organizations felt the security team would cause delays or even stymie the implementation of these transformations.

These IT decision makers cited some security issues in digital transformation, which include: the need to secure additional technologies without additional resources; increased security risks as a result of the adoption of new technologies; less control over data systems access as a result of the transformation; tradeoffs between employee productivity and security; and difficulty in finding expertise to support new technologies.

Still, John Milburn, vice president and general manager of Dell's One Identity Products, said, “When done right, security can enable organizations to aggressively adopt new technologies and practices that can have a direct, positive impact on revenue, profits, employee productivity and customer experience.”
