Former Louisiana Life & Health Insurance Guaranty Association (LAHIGA) director Phyllis Perron passed away on March 10 in Baton Rouge following a recent cancer diagnosis.

In her online obituary, it was noted that the Baton Rouge Business Report recognized Phyllis with an Influential Women in Business Award in 2013.

“In the profile article published in conjunction with this honor, Phyllis said one of her proudest accomplishments was her work on legislation that created the Louisiana Life & Health Insurance Guaranty Association,” reads part of the obituary. “This association was formed in 1991 as a safety net for policyholders whose insurers for life or accident and health insurance become insolvent.

“Throughout her career, state agencies and lawmakers respected the thoroughness and toughness with which Phyllis worked to represent her clients. When Phyllis officially retired in 2019, legislators publicly displayed their appreciation by passing a Senate resolution commending Phyllis on her career.”

Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple echoed the sentiment, describing Perron as a decades-long “influential player” in politics, particularly in the area of insurance.

“Her contributions span from becoming the executive director of the Louisiana Association of Life Underwriters in 1977, to lobbying for various insurance associations with the formation of Phyllis Perron and Associates in 1984,” Temple noted while expressing his deepest condolences in a statement.

One of her greatest contributions was in the creation and leadership of the Louisiana Life & Health Insurance Guaranty Association, a safety net for the policyholders of insolvent life and health insurers that will protect Louisianans for generations to come.

“Phyllis was highly respected by Louisiana policymakers, insurance leaders, and the residents she fought to protect. She will be greatly missed.”

The former LAHIGA leader was “80 years young” at the time of her passing.
