With Hurricane Matthew moving towards the US East Coast from the Caribbean, the US Coast Guard is making preparations to mitigate crisis situations that may arise.

The Coast Guard has set port condition X-ray for several ports in Florida and port condition Whiskey for one of South Carolina’s ports.

Despite the warning flags though, terminals and facilities in Florida remain open to commercial traffic and transfer operations.

Matthew has been tagged a dangerous category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale, with an initial intensity of 125 knots, and gusts of up to 150 knots.

Meteorologists expect Matthew to weaken somewhat over the next couple of days as it hits land, but is expected to remain a powerful hurricane until midweek.
