As the market for social media grows, the country’s largest companies are learning to use it for maximum effect.

A study by research firm TrackMaven, which analyzed the Instagram activity of Fortune 500 companies, revealed that they make the most use of the social medium by logging in more time instead of the usual 9AM to 5PM shift, and posting content from 9AM to 9PM.

Instagram is a social media service that allows users to interact with their followers mostly through photos and video snippets. Enterprises are increasingly migrating to the platform to complement their marketing programs.

Activity peaks on Thursdays and Fridays, but slows over Saturdays and Sundays, the study also revealed.

Companies need to understand this appropriate timing for releasing their Instagram content to make sure reach as large an audience as possible, as Fortune 500 companies do.

To make the most out of Instagram posts, the report suggested posting questions and using hashtags that followers can use to improve audience engagement. Almost 90% of these companies also do not use “filters” or image manipulation tools to alter their posts, the report said.

TrackMaven further recommended learning from the example of top Instagram users such as Nike and Starbucks. According to the study, Nike owns the “most popular” Instagram account with 50 million followers, while Starbucks has the highest audience engagement ratio.
