Delaware legislators spared non-profits that receive state subsidies from budget cuts.

The State’s Joint Finance Committee voted to approve a bill that authorises spending $46 million in grants to help non-profits. The fund saw an increase of $800,000 compared to last year. It supports volunteer fire companies, drug treatment organisations, and many others.

The full House and Senate approve the fund before it becomes official.

Jim Purcell, president of Communities in Schools of Delaware, said that the legislature may have considered the impact non-profits have on their communities, and the increasing number of people needing such services.

Budget cuts loomed large over the state’s non-profit sector as law makers spent much of May turning down proposals for new spending due to  projections of decreased tax collection next year.

Finance committee chair Sen. McDowell D-Wilmington North stated that her personally thought non-profit aid carried much weight, thus he said, the upper and lower houses found “enough money to get everything done”.
