Michigan seeks approval for laxer insurance education requirements

Legislation that will allow insurance agents in Michigan to carry over excess education hours into the next training cycle has been given approval by the House.

Current laws require agents to complete 24 hours of professional development training – comprised of customer service training and education of industry trends – every two years. But the proposed new rules would allow up to half of those hours to count toward the next two year cycle, where an agent’s training exceeded the required amount.

The legislation was introduced by Rep. Tom Barrett (R-Potterville), who implied that in the case of such education, passion is the most important part, a report from The Peninsula said. It is now headed for the desk of Gov. Rick Snyder for approval after passing through the House.

“Everyone relies on their insurance companies and agents to be there when needed, whether it’s a health issue or the family vehicle is damaged in a car accident,” Rep. Barret said in the report. “If an insurance agent is passionate about their career and exceeding the requirement of outside commitment, they should be able to have those hours carry over on to the next cycle.”

The legislation will neither affect the ethic course requirement nor permit duplicate courses to be carried over and count towards the same span, and it will also bring the Department of Insurance and Financial Service in for program oversight, requiring them to survey instructors.
