Most underwriters keep a mental list of the brokers whose submissions are worth opening first and Sixfold wants to put that list on a screen.

The underwriting AI company released what it calls a distribution intelligence layer during the week of ITC Vegas, Roger Ferrandis, Sixfold’s head of partnerships, told Insurance Business at the recent conference. The feature gives underwriters a view of broker performance, Ferrandis said, “understanding whether their distribution channel network is sending them submissions that are aligned with the risk appetite or not.”

The aim is to help underwriters decide where to spend their time.

“So they can make decisions on how to invest their time on the relationship building that they have with brokers, saying Broker A always sends me good stuff, Broker B is always sending me submissions that I’m not underwriting,” he said. “So giving them that layer of intelligence will allow them to make smarter decisions in that regard.”

Why underwriters want the data

The pressure behind tools like this is volume. Submission numbers have outpaced the capacity of underwriting teams to review them manually, as Insurance Business found in its guide to AI-powered underwriting and pricing intelligence. McKinsey’s June 2026 report on the future underwriting operating system and AI-led submission handling describes a model in which AI handles routine intake and triage and flags trends across brokers and segments.

Ferrandis estimated that manual work takes up half of an underwriter’s time. With AI handling more of it, he said, underwriters can focus on “relationship building or with looking at cases that can be very, very complex rather than, you know, spending 50% of their time in manual repetitive tasks.”

Sixfold’s checks go beyond appetite. “We will use our AI to identify if there are any data contradictions between what the broker is sending and what online sources are saying about the risk,” Ferrandis said.

Verification came up across the conference. At a separate ITC session, executives warned that AI-generated fake claims are outpacing insurers’ fraud defenses.

From intake to quote

The scorecard sits on top of a broader push into automation. Sixfold recently released an AI underwriter for life and health, following its property and casualty product a few months earlier.

“So it’s capable of getting the submission from intake and driving it to the quote stage, and will only stop when it needs human intervention or human judgment,” Ferrandis said.

Sixfold does not try to fix data quality itself, he said. It works with the data providers carriers already use. “We’re here to put that data in action.”

He expects the most manual roles in insurance, such as assembling documents and pulling data out of them, to feel the effects first. “That is becoming a more commoditized solution,” he said.

For underwriters, he sees a different outcome. “What we are seeing is underwriters spending their time in a smarter way.”

A crowded field

Sixfold is one of many companies chasing the same buyers. Ferrandis said AI underwriting now draws 15 to 20 competitors, many founded within the past year, compared with two or three a few years ago.

Investors are backing the category heavily. AI-focused companies took 99.1% of global insurtech funding in the second quarter of 2026, according to Gallagher Re.

Other ITC Vegas sessions covered the insurance transformation trends shaping the sector, from parametric cover to claims drones.
