10 things carriers can do to help their brokers

An insurance industry executive with experience on both sides of the fence offers 10 suggestions to help promote healthier relationships between insurance companies and their distribution partners.

Insurance carriers could do 10 things that would improve their relationships with their brokerages, according to an article recently published in Property Casualty 360.

The author of the article, Dave Thomas, a senior executive with several property and casualty insurance organizations in the United States, recently moved to the brokerage side, taking over a mid-sized brokerage in Northern Indiana.

In his article, “Top 10 Changes Carriers Must Make to Improve Agency Relationships,” Thomas said he routinely observed carriers doing things that hindered their relationships with their broker partners.

Based on his observations, Thomas offered the following 10 tips to carriers that would help them to improve their relationships with the broker distribution channel:   

Hands-on underwriting help
Don’t send in marketing reps that waste the brokerage’s time. The carrier should send a representative who is “fully prepared to look at our new business prospects and upcoming renewals and engage in underwriting and quoting while in our office—or make a commitment to do so in the upcoming days and weeks,” Thomas writes.

What classes do you write, really?
Carriers need to say what they do, and do what they say. “Companies will provide their agents a list of classes of business in which they consider themselves players — and want to encourage the agency to submit risks in those classes,” Thomas writes. “But when the agency does so, it learns that the carrier really only writes risks meeting other unpublished criteria or prices these risks so uncompetitively that the business is not marketable.”

Don’t silo communications with brokerages
Thomas said he understands the need for carriers to silo personal and commercial lines internally. “However, I do not see the need to have two marketing reps calling on the agency,” he wrote. “Nor is it acceptable to separate personal-lines from commercial-lines production for the sake of profit-sharing eligibility.”

Profit-sharing updates
If carriers want brokerages to encourage particular results through profit-sharing agreements, the carriers need to provide brokerages with regular profit-sharing updates throughout the year.

Avoid “share shifting”
Cease or curb the relatively infrequent activity of “share shifting,” in which carriers seek to grow their books with agencies by encouraging agency principals to move existing books from other carriers with accompanying commission-rate enhancements. “However, they fail to realize or choose to ignore the fact that the agency’s primary objectives are to grow its book of business by high retention rates and a steady stream of new accounts—and to move existing business from one carrier to another only when it is in the best interest of its client,” Thomas writes.

Respecting broker autonomy
Respect the business autonomy of brokerages. Thomas disparages the “nearly universal” practice of carriers to “annually send their marketing representatives in to see agency principals asking for a production goal for the upcoming year.” He said the practice originates in the home and branch offices of carriers, where marketing personnel set internal goals for each of their agencies.  

Do your due diligence on broker partners
Carriers need to do their due diligence before pursuing contracts with prospective brokerages. “In the past 24 months, our agency has either pursued or has been pursued by prospective carriers on 11 occasions,” Thomas wrote. “In those instances where we were pursued (six times), the carriers’ marketing representatives never satisfactorily explained why entering into a contractual relationship with our agency was a mutually beneficial union for both parties.”

Don’t hang your hat on “ease of doing business”
Technology has improved doing business with insurance companies generally, and so “ease of doing business” should not be the signature benefit that carriers promote to consumers, according to Thomas. “From time to time, I pass a motel advertising air-conditioned rooms or colored TVs or both,” he added. “Offering ‘amenities’ that the buying public expects or demands is a poor way to differentiate one’s business.”

Singing from the same hymn book
Carrier executives must create internal processes in which managers, marketing representatives, underwriting personnel and their contracted agency personnel all sing from the same hymnal, said Thomas.

Allow your underwriting departments to be creative
Carriers need to allow their underwriting departments to be creative. This requires more precise selection of underwriters, better training regimens and strict auditing of accounts written, Thomas said, although “unwilling to succumb to this burden, the majority of company executives have tied the hands of underwriters. They have institutionalized what can be done, what cannot be done and what discretion, if any, underwriters are permitted to exercise.”
