Insurance Business magazine’s search for Canada’s top broker brought some fierce competition for the coveted number one position – but when the dust settled, there was only one clear winner.

Danny Sgro, partner, chief sales officer of technology and specialty risk advisor with Jones DesLauriers Insurance in Toronto, Ont., ascended to the top of the mountain in Insurance Business magazine’s inaugural Elite Top 30 Brokers list.

“I am honoured to receive this prestigious award and recognition as the top insurance broker in Canada,” Sgro told Insurance Business. “It is wonderful to be acknowledged for my dedication to my clients and contributions to the insurance industry.”

Sgro racked up some impressive numbers along the way, recording almost $3.5 million in revenue, outpacing his nearest competitor – ironically also one of his nearest Jones DeLauriers producers.

Kevin Stedman, fellow partner and chief sales officer in transportation, manufacturing and construction advisor at JDL in Toronto, fought the good fight for top spot, but came up more than a million dollars shy of Sgro.

The search for Canada’s top broker was conducted over a two-month period through an online survey, weighing a variety of criteria how brokers conducted their business, the awards and industry accolades received over the year, to a forward-thinking embrace of new technology. (continued.)

But of course, a universal measure of success in the industry can be boiled down to the size of the commission cheque.

According to Jeff Purdy, senior vice president of Applied Systems, recognizing Canada’s top performers creates an environment for brokers to shine and improve their craft.

“We are excited to partner with Canada’s Top 30 Elite Brokers program to help create a forum for excellence for the Canadian broker channel to share best practices and empower the broker of tomorrow,” says Purdy. “There is tremendous talent and potential within the Canadian brokerage community and there are many success stories to celebrate.”
