Fraud continues to plague Ontario’s auto insurance sector, as the Financial Services Commission of Ontario has posted another consumer warning of an insurance-related scam in the province.

According to FSCO, Kimberly or Gelisa Watson has been identified as not being licensed to do insurance business in Ontario, as she appears to be selling false auto insurance, according to FSCO

“This individual (Watson) appears to be selling auto insurance while not being licensed with The Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario (RIBO) or FSCO as a general agent,” states the FSCO website. “It appears that a fraudulent liability slip was issued by the individual showing Buckley Insurance Brokers Ltd. as the broker, and The Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company as the insurer.”

Watson had been communicating via text messaging or over the phone.

“It should be noted that Kimberly or Gelisa Watson is not affiliated or associated with The Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company, an insurance company that is licensed by FSCO, and Buckley Insurance Brokers Ltd, a broker that is registered with RIBO,” says FSCO.

It was with the help of Aviva Canada that police were able to arrest and charge Renato (Nico) Nolvis with auto insurance fraud last month.

“Innocent victims are losing thousands of dollars without obtaining any real coverage,” Steve Cohen, senior vice-president, personal lines pricing & underwriting for Aviva Canada, told Insurance Business. “This puts the consumer at a huge financial risk in the unfortunate event that they are involved in a collision.”

Nolvis is currently facing charges of fraud, and has already appeared in a Newmarket court in June. A Mississauga resident, he is charged with three counts of fraud under $5,000, uttering a forged document and making a false document.
