An agreement between Zurich Canada and a provider of telematics devices will key on the added safety benefits of such technology for commercial fleet drivers.

The PeopleNet Canada partnership with Zurich Canada will allow first-time customers of the insurer’s transportation and commercial auto to obtain preferred pricing on PeopleNet’s fleet mobility system and monthly monitoring fees.

“We are excited about the opportunity to work more closely with Zurich and its customers,” said Jamie Williams, the president of PeopleNet Canada, part of Trimble’s international transportation and logistics division. “Through use of the PeopleNet System, fleets can expect even greater levels of safety, compliance and efficiency throughout their operations.”

Trucking companies have been using telematics for years, primarily as a means to monitor fuel consumption and freight-tracking. However, more and more transportation companies are using telematics as a fleet safety tool.

“We want to work with each of our customers to make sure they are using telematics in ways that fit the size and scale of their particular operation,” said Clive Thomson, National Transportation Portfolio Executive for Zurich Canada’s Risk Services department.

Transportation and commercial auto customers can use telematics to not only manage the data they receive from onboard devices, but sift through it to identify patterns in areas such as: lane departures, hard braking and sudden stops.

According to Zurich, it’s risk services team can use the data to work with customers to create solutions such as targeted training programs for drivers.
