Adam Winslow (pictured) has officially started as group chief executive officer of CFC, taking the reins from Louise O'Shea three weeks after the specialist insurer first confirmed his appointment.
Winslow joins from Direct Line Group, where he served as group CEO and oversaw the insurer's £3.7 billion combination with Aviva, having previously led Aviva's UK and Ireland general insurance business. O'Shea, who led CFC for nearly six years, first as an independent non-executive director and latterly as chief executive, has stepped down but remains a significant shareholder in the business.
Andy Holmes, CFC's group capacity director and a 23-year veteran of the company, had been serving as acting CEO in the interim.
Speaking when her departure was announced, O'Shea reflected on her tenure at the company. "It has been a privilege to lead such an extraordinary business and to work alongside so many talented, passionate and committed people. Together, we've continued to grow, innovate and strengthen CFC, but what I'll remember most is the culture we've built and the people who make this company so special," she said.
"I'm immensely proud of everything we've achieved together and even more proud of how we've achieved it - with ambition, collaboration, resilience and a relentless focus on delivering for our customers, brokers and carrier partners. We've also, importantly, had a lot of fun along the way! As I hand over to Adam Winslow, I do so with enormous confidence. CFC has an exceptionally bright future and I know the business will go from strength to strength. Thank you to everyone I've had the pleasure of working with over the past few years. Onwards!"
Speaking on his first day, Winslow said he was already getting a sense of the culture behind the business. "CFC is an exceptional business, and it's clear to see the energy, ambition and entrepreneurial spirit that have made it such a success. I'm looking forward to getting to know colleagues across the company and building on the strong foundations already in place as we continue to scale the business, strengthen our market leadership and unlock the next phase of CFC's growth," he said.
Winslow's start date also sets up a further leadership change later this year. Former Direct Line chief financial officer Jane Poole is due to join CFC in September, subject to regulatory approval, reuniting two executives who worked together through Direct Line's merger with Aviva.
Their arrival brings a pairing with recent experience of large-scale integration to a business whose growth strategy under O'Shea was built on organisational expansion rather than consolidation, a contrast that will likely shape how Winslow's early priorities are read by the market.
CFC, headquartered in London, employs more than 1,000 people and operates in more than 100 countries, having built its position as a specialist managing general agent around underwriting expertise in cyber and other emerging risk lines.
Winslow's move continues a pattern of senior executives crossing from the UK's large composite insurers into the specialty and MGA sector as that segment's delegated authority model continues to expand within the London market. His background, however, sits closer to personal lines scale and integration than to the founder-led, product-innovation culture CFC has cultivated under O'Shea, and how he adapts that experience to a fast-growing specialist business, rather than the appointment itself, is now the more interesting question for the market to watch.
