Beneva has been named title sponsor of the Calgary Marathon for the next five years, with the newly branded Beneva Calgary Marathon debuting a refreshed look on May 29 and 30, 2027.
"Beneva is proud to join forces, as title sponsor, with the Calgary Marathon, a landmark event that inspires thousands of Canadians to embrace an active lifestyle," said Jean-François Chalifoux, Beneva's president and CEO. "As a mutualist company, we believe in the power of collective action to strengthen the health and well-being of our communities." Paul Chiswell, president of Run Calgary's board of directors, said the two organizations share "a very similar view of what a running event can do for a community," pointing to wellness, volunteering and civic pride alongside the race itself.
Calgary is the latest addition to a running sponsorship strategy Beneva has been building methodically since its 2020 formation from the merger of La Capitale and SSQ Insurance. The insurer has been title sponsor of the Quebec City Marathon for 17 consecutive years and the Montreal Marathon for multiple years, expanded into Ontario with the Mississauga Marathon in 2024 and Toronto's Spring Run-Off, and moved into British Columbia with the Vancouver Half Marathon starting in 2026.
Calgary fills a notable gap in that map: Beneva now holds title sponsorships spanning Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia and now Alberta, giving it genuine coast-to-coast visibility in a sponsorship category, running events, that has become a recognizable brand-building tool across Canada's insurance industry.
The timing lines up with a major structural change at Beneva itself. The insurer completed its merger with Gore Mutual in 2026, growing to 3.8 million members and 6,500 employees with $30.3 billion in combined assets, and consolidating what Beneva itself describes as its pan-Canadian presence. Gore Mutual brought meaningful existing distribution and brand presence in Western Canada, and this Calgary sponsorship is a plausible next step in converting that newly combined national footprint into consumer-facing visibility in a market Beneva didn't have the same organic reach in before the merger.
Running event sponsorships give insurers more than brand exposure. They align the company publicly with preventive health behaviours that insurers have a direct financial interest in encouraging, since physical activity is linked to reduced frequency and severity of certain health claims.
Canada Running Series events, the same family Beneva already sponsors in Toronto and Vancouver, have collectively raised more than $14 million for local charities, giving these sponsorships a genuine community and philanthropic dimension beyond pure marketing reach.
For brokers working with Beneva, particularly in group benefits and individual insurance, this expansion reinforces a broader pattern of the insurer investing heavily in consumer-facing brand building following its Gore Mutual integration, at a moment when Canada's insurance market continues consolidating around a smaller number of larger, nationally scaled players.
A stronger, more visible brand presence in Alberta specifically could support Beneva's efforts to grow its book of business in a province where it previously had less organic market recognition than in its traditional Quebec base.
