Platform Financial, the life insurance and estate planning arm of brokerage PLATFORM Insurance Management, has expanded into Alberta and appointed two senior leaders.

Brad Malazdrewicz (pictured, left) joins as managing partner for Alberta, based in Calgary. He will lead the firm’s operations in the province and support its growing advisor network. Blaise Morin (pictured, right) joins as director of insurance solutions, a national role focused on advanced insurance planning for business owners, professionals and wealthy families.

“Our expansion into Alberta represents an exciting new chapter for Platform Financial,” said Matthew Francis, president of Platform Financial.

Francis said Malazdrewicz’s understanding of the advisor landscape made him the right person to lead in Alberta, and that Morin’s experience with high-net-worth clients strengthened the firm’s capabilities nationally.

The hires

Malazdrewicz brings experience in financial services leadership, business development and growing advisor teams. Morin has more than 20 years in financial services and insurance, focusing on insurance planning, estate preservation and advisor support. He has worked with business owners, professionals and affluent families on insurance strategies tied to their wealth, tax and estate planning. That includes leading insurance teams and working on advanced case design.

The release does not name either executive’s previous employer.

From construction broker to estate planning

PLATFORM was founded in 2014 by Francis and Charles Quenneville as a boutique brokerage serving the development and construction industry, and has since added surety, commercial P&C, high-net-worth personal lines, employee benefits and natural resources practices. It is employee-owned.

In January 2025, it launched Platform Financial as a specialized life insurance advisory business focused on tax and estate planning. At the time, Francis said the division was part of PLATFORM’s aim to act as an enterprise risk solutions group for its clients.

Why Alberta

The move gives the life insurance business a base in a province with a large population of private business owners, particularly in energy and construction. Those are sectors where PLATFORM’s P&C and surety teams already have clients. Permanent life insurance is widely used in corporate estate planning to fund tax liabilities on death and to support business succession.

For brokers and advisors, the expansion shows how commercial brokerages are increasingly cross-selling life and estate planning to the owners of the businesses they already insure. A firm that handles a developer’s surety bonds and liability program is well placed to have the succession and estate conversation as well, and that competes with standalone life insurance and wealth advisors for the same clients.
