Why developing an inclusive insurance workplace is a “continuous journey”

Diversity & Inclusion

Westland Insurance is one of the most ambitious independent insurance brokers in Canada, and it shows through its aggressive growth strategy.

The broker has been snapping up businesses left and right in 2022, and even welcomed the new year with the double acquisitions of RiskTech Insurance Services and Assurances R. Legault.

But not only is Westland a fast-growing brokerage, but a highly inclusive one as well. Insurance Business named Westland one of its 5-Star Diversity, Equity and Inclusion awardees for 2023, under the “500–2,499 employees” category.

"We’re incredibly proud to receive the 5-Star award, as it’s a clear testament to the dedication of our employees in building our diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture at Westland," commented Westland Insurance president and CEO Jamie Lyons in a new release. "Diversity and inclusion are at the core of Westland's values. We're more committed than ever to fostering a culture where all employees and clients feel valued, respected, and empowered to reach their full potential."

This inclusive work culture was not made overnight. Westland undertook a complete overhaul of its culture and organizational values in 2021, and it has paid off since.

“That was really important because that framework is really an umbrella for everything we do,” explained chief people officer Keri Fraser in a previous interview. “So, we felt like it really has to start there at that strategic macro level. We also redid our five-year vision with strategic pillars, and we have one strategic pillar that's 100% focused on being a modern and inclusive employer. That's the first thing - really starting out at that strategic level and ensuring that's communicated to every employee.”

Westland’s DE&I initiatives include diversity and inclusion training for senior leadership, a DE&I program with a working group and council, as well as a number of employee-first policies such as flexible hybrid work guidelines. The brokerage also explained that it works with the BLAST network, a recruitment module integration that ensures job openings are also targeting underrepresented populations.
