Global law firm DLA Piper has hired a new associate to join its Canada offices.

Nivedhya “Nivi” Ramaswamy will be based in DLA Piper Canada’s Toronto office as part of the firm’s litigation, arbitration and investigations group.

A release said that Ramaswamy was previously associated with a national full-service firm, where she acted for both private and public companies, as well as condominium corporations, investment groups and individuals.

With her inclusion in DLA Piper’s team, Ramaswamy will continue her commercial litigation practice, focusing on complex engineering-related matters – these include professional negligence, product liability, construction law, environmental law and insurance coverage issues.

Before taking up law, Ramaswamy was a remediation engineer in a US-based engineering consulting firm – in that role, she was involved in several hazardous waste clean-up projects.

She is currently serving on the editorial board of the Canadian Intellectual Property Review, as well as the executive committee of Toronto Computer Lawyers’ Group. Ramaswamy also volunteers as a legal and business adviser for the Cleantech Venture Services Group at MaRS Discovery District.
