It’s easy to dismiss the issues that footballers face as “first world problems.” After all, what problems can these multi-millionaires have, while living in their mansions, driving fast cars and doing a job that most of us would dream of?

However, even removing the fact that not all footballers live that Premier League lifestyle and life in the lower divisions can be a much harder financial grind, the reality is that the pressures of fame and being in the sporting spotlight are intense, and, these stars have families and health issues and problems just like the rest of us.

With this in mind, brokerage giant Gallagher has decided to extend its professional footballers’ insurance product to incorporate mental health benefits.

In making the announcement, the company explained that there has been rising demand in footballers looking for mental health treatment in recent years with the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) reporting a six-fold increase from 2013-2018. Now Gallagher is offering up to £10,000 towards therapy, and 24hr access to counselling.

“One in four of us will experience a mental health problem in any given year and over 10% of the population will be suffering from depression at any given time,” said Michael Owen, partner and head of sport at Gallagher’s specialty division. “Mental health issues don’t discriminate, and with statistics like these, professional football clubs cannot afford to overlook the mental wellbeing of their players – and it is vital for them to have access to fast and appropriate treatment if needed.

“In recent years, there has been a seismic shift in understanding of mental health issues within the industry. The attitude toward seeking treatment for mental health suffering within football is changing, with recent initiatives such as Prince William’s ‘Heads Up’ campaign in partnership with the FA signposting support for those in need, and high-profile players speaking out about their own mental health challenges and encouraging others to do the same.”

According to the firm, the product is unique in the market and accompanies its existing offering that helps with a lump sum should a player suffer a career ending injury, as well as for a host of other risks such as accident or illness cover, and high net worth insurance on personal assets.
