Generali has opened a new representative office in Brussels, which will help the insurance group study the activities of European Union (EU) institutions and strengthen its EU public affairs activities.

In a release, Generali said that through its new office it aims to “best represent its business priorities while playing an increasingly active corporate citizenship role in order to contribute to sustainable recovery and the European Green Deal.”

“Strengthening our presence in Brussels will enable Generali to be even more actively involved in the EU’s key strategic issues,” said Generali Group CEO Philippe Donnet.

Donnet added that Brussels is where the EU’s recovery effort is being orchestrated from, and the decisions made in the city will “determine the future of the insurance sector,” from Solvency II to sustainability regulations and the standards for Green Bonds.

“We want to give our contribution to the definition of these standards that will effect one of the world’s most significant economies and the lives of over 500 million citizens,” the chief executive stated.

To help with the EU’s recovery efforts, and coinciding with its 190th anniversary, Generali launched the “Fenice 190” investment plan. The €3.5 billion plan will see the insurance group invest funds over the next five years on projects – specifically focusing on infrastructure, innovation and digitalisation, SMEs, green housing, health facilities, and education. Generali has already funded €1 billion in 2020.
