Specialist insurer Markel International has bolstered its liability team, tapping Simon Engelen to serve as senior marine and energy liability underwriter.

Reporting to liability head Andrew Carter, the key arrival will provide support in managing the team, particularly when it comes to activities in UK marine, marine trades, and ports and terminals. Engelen’s more than 16 years of experience includes time spent at the likes of MS Amlin, W.R. Berkley, QBE, and Navigators.

“Simon is a first-class hire and adding someone of his expertise to our team will enable Markel to enhance its Lloyd’s box service as well as broker and client focus and travel,” commented Carter. “We are delighted to have such an experienced underwriter joining our team.”

Describing Engelen as “well known to Markel,” marine and energy division managing director Paul Jenks said: “We have a tremendous amount of faith that he will be a huge asset to our marine liability team and its future success.”

A Markel Corporation subsidiary, Markel International has offices in 17 countries and operates through six divisions. The firm underwrites insurance and reinsurance risks through Syndicate 3000 at Lloyd’s, Markel International Insurance Company Limited, and Markel Resseguradora do Brasil S.A.
