Guidewire Software

Guidewire Software builds the core technology platform that many property and casualty (P&C) insurers use to run their business. The San Mateo–based company started with claims software and grew into a full suite covering policy, billing, and claims, plus digital, analytics, and AI tools. It now works with insurers of many sizes across dozens of countries.

History of Guidewire Software

Six enterprise-software veterans started the company in 2001. They bet that P&C insurers needed a modern alternative to aging mainframe systems, and built ClaimCenter first, since claims handling gave carriers the fastest way to see value from new software. Key milestones since then include:

  • 2003: CNA and Hastings Mutual sign on as the first insurers to select ClaimCenter
  • 2006: PolicyCenter launches as the company’s second core product, with CNA among its first customers
  • 2007: BillingCenter rounds out InsuranceSuite, giving carriers a single family of systems for policy, billing, and claims
  • 2012: the firm goes public on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker GWRE
  • 2017: InsuranceNow debuts as Guidewire’s first all-in-one cloud platform
  • 2020: the company releases its first cloud-optimized platform version, marking a full shift toward cloud delivery
  • 2021: Guidewire marks 20 years in the industry and acquires HazardHub, adding property risk data and scoring to its analytics lineup
  • 2022: the business opens a global services center in Bengaluru, India, and names Dublin its EMEA headquarters

That steady run of product launches and acquisitions turned a single claims tool into a platform built to cover most of what a P&C insurer needs day to day.

What does Guidewire Software offer?

The company groups its offerings into a few main areas built around P&C insurance operations. Core systems and services include:

  • PolicyCenter, BillingCenter, and ClaimCenter, sold together as InsuranceSuite for policy, billing, and claims management
  • InsuranceNow, a cloud-based all-in-one option built for smaller and mid-sized carriers
  • Guidewire Cloud Platform, the underlying cloud infrastructure behind its core products
  • analytics tools such as HazardHub, Predict, and Cyence for property risk data, pricing, and cyber risk analysis
  • Guidewire Marketplace, where insurers can add vetted insurtech applications from outside partners

Carriers can choose the pieces that fit their business rather than adopt the whole suite at once, and many start with one core system before expanding into others. Guidewire Software also sells implementation and consulting services to help carriers get these systems live.

Awards and recognition

Guidewire Software has also picked up recognition beyond product rankings. Its chief customer officer earned a spot on IBA’s 2026 Elite Women list, which recognizes senior women leaders across the US insurance industry. P&C market position

Guidewire Software runs a company that’s built only for P&C insurance, rather than a general enterprise software vendor that happens to serve carriers. More than 570 insurers around the world run on its platform, from small regional carriers to some of the largest names in the industry.

The firm’s shift toward cloud delivery, along with its growing analytics and AI lineup, has become central to how it pitches itself to insurers weighing a move away from older core systems. Its marketplace and partner network also let carriers add outside tools without building everything from scratch.
