Authorities in North Carolina arrested 70 Charlotte-area taxi and limousine drivers last week for allegedly evading automobile insurance rates, North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced.
Investigators accuse the drivers of fraudulently reporting the same address at 8814 Silver Charm Lane, Waxhaw. They said the drivers were attempting to evade the higher automobile insurance premiums in Charlotte.
Union County property records show the Waxhaw house is a two-story stucco structure with about 4,000 sq. ft. of living space, the
Associated Press reported. A phone number listed for the house was disconnected.

The drivers were each charged with one count of rate evasion.
An estimated 10 cents of every dollar paid in premiums goes toward the payment of fraudulent claims, said Causey. The North Carolina Department of Insurance employs 20 sworn state law enforcement officers dedicated to investigating and prosecuting claims of insurance and bail bonding fraud.
