In time for spring, the Better Business Bureau of Kansas (BBB) has issued a statement reminding homeowners to check that the lawn maintenance crews they are hiring are covered by insurance.
Spring is typically the season for housekeeping and maintenance. While lawn contractors can perform a variety of services to help homeowners freshen up their properties – things such as cutting the grass, trimming the hedges, planting trees, and so on – those services carry risks.
Workers could get injured on the job, windows could break as a result of a service personnel’s error, a homeowner’s car could get damaged in an accident, highly valued trees and greenery could potentially be damaged by a gardening job gone wrong – all these things, and more, will require insurance coverage, the BBB warned.
The BBB noted that lawn contractors should have the following coverage: general liability to repair damages to the customer’s property; workers’ compensation to take care of their employees’ medical bills, business property insurance to cover for equipment damage.
Homeowners should request insurance information from any lawn contractors they might hire to clean up their yards, the consumer group highly recommended. The group also suggested that customers should also visit the BBB’s official website to check any complaints a particular contractor may have from other previous customers.
