GEICO is expanding its veteran onboarding program, which helps former military personnel find new careers as IT employees for the insurance company.

Previously based solely at GEICO’s corporate headquarters in Chevy Chase, MD, the company’s Veteran IT Transition Program is now being implemented at the insurer’s regional office in Virginia Beach, VA.

Launched in 2015, the Veteran IT Transition Program combines 12 months of classroom work, mentoring with real-world experience to help military veterans transition into IT analysts with GEICO. A release noted that as they undergo the program, veterans are paid and receive benefits.

“Those who have served in the military have unique talents and skills,” said GEICO manager of IT talent and leadership development Missy Clark. “GEICO believes in this program. We believe our commitment to supporting veterans’ onboarding, training and development will build long-term employment and growth opportunities that will be beneficial to veterans and GEICO.”

According to Clark, applicants to the program do not need previous tech experience or a college degree. What the program does need are veterans who are “results-oriented, adaptable and self-reliant.”

“We look for demonstrated leadership, a willingness to learn and demonstrated growth while in the military,” the manager noted.

The Virginia Beach location’s transition program begins in early 2020; applications for the program are now open.
