Auto-Owners Insurance, which opened an information technology center last year in Grand Rapids, Mich., has announced a $1-million expansion of the office and the addition of 60 new jobs.

“Auto-Owners Insurance has grown tremendously in the past year, and we expect that upward trend to continue for several years, so it’s imperative that our Grand Rapids technology center grow with the demand,” Jim Schumacher, senior vice president of information technology, said in a statement.

The Michigan Development Corp. is supporting the expansion with a $315,000 grant, according to a Michigan Live report.
Jennifer Wangler, senior business development manager for The Right Place, Grand Rapids’ economic development entity, told Michigan Live that the company’s Michigan roots made Grand Rapids attractive.

“Auto-Owners operates in 25 other states, but proximity to the company’s Lansing headquarters as well as strong local technology talent convinced them that expanding its current technology center would be most effective,” she said.

“We’ve outgrown the space already,” Schumacher told Michigan Live. “We knew there would be a time to explore growing our tech center operations, so we’re appreciative of The Right Place assisting us in pursuing the most effective option.”
