A new report found that more major companies – including insurers – are improving their benefits to better support the fertility treatment needs of their employees.

The Family Builder Workplace Index 2019-2020, by online fertility treatment resource FertilityIQ, ranked numerous companies across various sectors based on how much fertility treatment support they give to their employees. Companies that gave benefits for more IVF cycles, as well as not requiring pre-authorization prior to receiving the benefits, scored higher index point totals.

According to the index, the top placing insurance companies in terms of fertility benefits were Lincoln Financial Group, Sedgwick, and Mass Mutual, which each scored 64,000 points for covering at least 2 IVF cycles and not requiring pre-authorization. AIG and Symetra tied for second place, each earning an index score of 42,000. Kenworth Insurance followed with 35,000, while Metlife, Liberty Mutual, and GEICO each scored 25,000 index points.

The index also found that 23% of the companies surveyed for the report implemented or considerably enhanced their fertility benefit. The index notes that this is a stark improvement, since during the 2017-2018 period only 10% of the companies made improvements to their fertility benefits.

Of note, businesses in fields like consumer product and retail, insurance, healthcare and industrial manufacturing drove nearly all of the fertility benefit improvements for this year’s index, FertilityIQ reported. In particular, two companies in the insurance sector – Liberty Mutual and Northwestern Mutual – “dramatically upgraded” their fertility programs to cover multiple in-vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles, the index highlighted.
