The state of Alabama has some of the lowest auto insurance penalties in America, a report from insuranceQuotes.com has revealed.

Drivers that commit violations such as excessive speeding, DUIs, and reckless driving are typically levied with increased auto insurance rates.

insuranceQuotes.com’s study ranked each state according to how large their insurance penalties were across three categories: driving 31 mph over the speed limit, reckless driving, and DUI/DWI.

The study discovered that Alabama generally had the lowest average rate increases for all three violation categories.

The average rate increase for motorists in Alabama penalized for driving over the limit was 11.74%. This put the state at fourth place for the lowest average rate increase among the states, behind Texas (11.73%), Kentucky (11.69%), and Missouri (9.10%). The national average rate increase for this category was 29.39%.

For reckless driving violations, Alabama drivers saw an average rate increase of 33.50%—the second lowest in the country. Louisiana emerged as the state with the lowest average rate increase in this category (29.28%). The national average rate increase for reckless driving was 84.50%.

Motorists in Alabama experience an average rate increase of 35.83% following a DUI/DWI violation, finishing fourth place once again for lowest rate increases among the states. Indiana (31.40%), Louisiana (29.28%), and Maryland (15.28%) were the only states that had lower rate increases. The national average rate increase for DUIs and DWIs was 94.32%.
