Trisura's second-quarter numbers look solid on paper. For brokers placing surety or program business in North America, the more useful story is what those numbers signal about a carrier building one of the more disciplined specialty books on the continent.
Trisura Group posted a combined ratio of 84.9% in the second quarter of 2026, down from 85.6% a year earlier. The loss ratio came in at 32.8%, improving from 33.2%. Underwriting income reached CA$30 million for the quarter, up 6.6% year-over-year, on net insurance revenue of CA$198.4 million.
The combined ratio held at 84.5% on a year-to-date basis, essentially flat versus 84.3% through the first half of 2025. Operating net income was CA$36.8 million in Q2, up 10.7%.
Those are genuinely good numbers, not just good-for-a-difficult-market numbers. For context, Skyward Specialty ran an 89.5% combined ratio in the first quarter of 2026, Palomar came in at 84.5% on a rising loss ratio, and Kinsale Capital - the E&S benchmark - operates in the low 80s. Trisura sits comfortably in that group in Q1 2026.
Gross premiums written fell 3.4% in the quarter to CA$870.3 million. The decline came from Canadian fronting, which contracted. Primary lines - surety, corporate insurance, and warranty - grew net insurance revenue 6.6% in Q2 and 8.8% year-to-date.
US programs grew, too. A strong prior year comparison in US surety moderated the Q2 figure. The underlying trend is growth in the high-margin book and a managed pullback in fronting.
That split matters for brokers. Primary lines are where Trisura earns its best underwriting margins and takes the most direct balance sheet exposure. Fronting is fee income with minimal retained risk. Letting fronting slide while growing primary lines is the opposite of the growth-at-any-cost pattern that tends to unwind badly when the cycle turns.
The Canadian surety market context is worth stating directly. It is currently soft, with elevated claims pressure and new capacity entering the market from players with limited loss history. The standard warning applies: carriers without deep books in surety tend to exit faster than they entered when large losses materialize. On multi-year infrastructure projects, that can be years after the premium was written.
Trisura is one of the largest surety writers in Canada and has been operating continuously in the market for more than two decades. For brokers placing surety on long-duration infrastructure projects, a carrier's presence in year six matters as much as its price in year one. Trisura's continuity in Canada is a material consideration, not a marketing point.
Trisura's US surety platform reached 48 state licenses in the second quarter, adding California, Hawaii, and Minnesota. It also further capitalized its US Surety balance sheet in Q2 to support anticipated growth.
That licensing expansion is not cosmetic. The treasury-listed entity is a prerequisite for writing federal and state government bonds. Reaching 48 states, including California, opens Trisura to a materially larger addressable market. Brokers placing surety on US infrastructure, construction, or government contracts in states that were previously off the table should update their market list.
President and CEO David Clare said the company has the "flexibility and capacity to continue growing accretively." The capital raise earlier this year backs that up structurally. Trisura issued CA$200 million in senior unsecured notes in Q1 2026, used partly to refinance debt and partly to fund the US Surety balance sheet.
An 84.9% combined ratio tells brokers something specific: Trisura is not subsidizing growth with underwriting losses. It is not relying on investment income to stay profitable. A carrier in that position can sustain appetite through a soft market without the pressure to quietly deteriorate its book to hold volume.
For brokers evaluating capacity, that profile matters as much as the headline rate. Trisura's results this quarter confirm it is still building, not defending.
The company said book value surpassed CA$1 billion in Q2, a milestone it had originally targeted for 2027.
