Coming out of the relative quiet of retirement, 74-year-old veteran news anchor Gene Cox has appeared in TV commercials for Elephant Insurance Services LLC, an insurance firm that has shown promising growth in providing coverage for vehicles in Texas, Maryland, Illinois, and Virginia.

Cox’s recognizable face and voice were the primary factors that led Elephant to decide to work with him, as the company is aiming to establish a stronger foothold in Richmond, where Cox has been a kind of pop culture icon for over three decades now. Richmond is a major market for the agency’s insurance policies.

“He hits a lot of the demographics we are looking for. People who have grown up in Richmond feel like they know Gene,” Elephant marketing manager Greg Minkler told the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

As a subsidiary of Admiral Group PLC, one of the U.K.’s top insurance companies, Elephant has seen rapid growth since it started selling auto insurance in 2009.
