Lumos Insurance announced that Plateau Insurance Company, its life and health carrier, has assumed the credit life and credit disability book of Mountain Life Insurance Company and Kentucky Home Life Insurance Company. The transaction adds approximately 200 bank and finance company relationships across six states.

Mountain Life’s ratings explain the move. AM Best downgraded Mountain Life to B (Fair) in September 2025, citing marginal operating performance and very high financial leverage following the issuance of a surplus note that raised concerns about the quality of its capital. In January 2026, AM Best downgraded Mountain Life again, to B- (Fair), and placed the ratings under review with developing implications.

The agency cited an ERM program that had not evolved in line with the company’s increased risk profile since its acquisition by MeM Capital LLC, compounded by pending litigation over ownership of the holding company. Lenders whose borrowers hold credit life policies underwritten by a carrier on that trajectory have reason to look for alternatives.

Lumos, rated A- (Excellent) by AM Best, has been preparing for this kind of opportunity. The company rebranded from The Plateau Group earlier in 2026 after modernizing its systems, governance, and capital structure, explicitly positioning itself to grow credit insurance as other carriers scaled back. Founded in 1981 by Tennessee banks as a credit insurance carrier, it has written the line for 45 years.

“As others leave the market, we are actively growing our credit insurance business,” said Vince Bodnar, Lumos president. “Over the past several years we invested significant time and money modernizing our systems and controls so we could scale this line.”

A shrinking carrier base drives consolidation

Credit life and credit disability has been a shrinking specialty for years. Large carriers have exited the line in stages, citing administrative complexity, regulatory scrutiny, and margin pressure. Mountain Life served banks and auto dealerships across six states in the South and Midwest. Policyholders will see no coverage change under the assumption.

Community bank, credit union, and consumer finance lenders in those six states will find their credit insurance programs now carried by Plateau Insurance Company. The carrier base in this line has narrowed as larger insurers have exited in stages, and scale and rating strength increasingly determine which carriers remain viable partners for lenders.

Lumos said it continues to evaluate additional blocks and program relationships. “As a dedicated credit insurance carrier, we provide lenders with certainty of execution,” said Ian Meadows, managing director of Lumos’s credit protection line.
