Amynta Group has closed its acquisition of Southern States Underwriters and SSC Insurance Agency, completing the New York-based insurance services company’s first entry into the agribusiness insurance market. The Richmond, Virginia-based managing general underwriter has specialized in commercial property and casualty coverage for agricultural suppliers, distributors, and service providers since 1953, and that sector history is a significant part of what Amynta is buying.

The deal, announced August 12 and closed on October 22, brings Amynta something harder to replicate than premium volume alone., brings Amynta something harder to replicate than premium volume alone. Southern States Underwriters serves as attorney-in-fact and exclusive distribution partner for the Southern States Insurance Exchange, a reciprocal insurer dedicated to the agribusiness market. That arrangement gives whoever controls Southern States Underwriters a structural position in how coverage flows to agribusiness accounts, not just underwriting authority, but the exclusive distribution channel for a dedicated carrier.

Continuity through the close

John Madden, president of Southern States Underwriters, will continue leading the business. Southern States Cooperative, the 103-year-old agricultural retail and service co-op that sold the insurance operations, will remain a long-term customer. Both signals point to an acquisition structured around preserving existing relationships rather than consolidating them into Amynta’s broader platform, at least in the near term.

That continuity is relevant to any broker who currently accesses Southern States Underwriters for agribusiness accounts across its core footprint of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Kentucky. Agribusiness is a specialist placement line, and underwriting appetite in the sector is concentrated among a narrow set of operators. A change in ownership that disrupts that access, whether through appetite shifts, integration friction, or leadership turnover, tends to have an outsized effect in niche markets where alternative capacity is limited. Madden’s retention reduces that risk without eliminating it.

A market drawing more capital

The acquisition fits a pattern taking shape across agricultural insurance. Private equity firms and specialist platforms have moved steadily into ag-specialty during 2026, drawn by the combination of specialist underwriting knowledge, established distribution relationships, and a market that standard carriers have largely left to dedicated operators.

Stone Point Capital’s acquisition of Ever.Ag’s risk management business, which spans insurance placement, advisory services, and commodity derivatives across the dairy, swine, cattle, and grain sectors, reflected the same logic.

On the distribution side, national wholesale brokerage Brown & Riding launched a dedicated agribusiness practice in September 2026 to address capacity pressures on fixed agricultural assets and a placement gap that retail agents cannot easily fill.

Amynta itself has been building out its specialty footprint through acquisition. Earlier in 2026, it combined Scion Underwriting Services into Ambridge Group to create an integrated specialty casualty platform. The Southern States deal extends that pattern into a new segment, one where the company had no prior public presence.

Robert Giammarco, chairman and CEO of Amynta Group, said when the deal was announced that Southern States Underwriters “nicely complements Amynta’s diversified platform,” and that the cooperative’s long-term customer relationship would continue. The company manages more than $4 billion in total managed premium across North America, the UK, Europe, and Australia, and is majority-owned by private equity firm Madison Dearborn Partners.
