Eric Hansen, senior vice president of underwriting at Preferred Employers Insurance, has been re-elected as chair of the California Workers’ Compensation Institute (CWCI) board of directors for 2025.

Hansen has been a member of the CWCI board since 2014 and served on its executive committee since 2021. He first assumed the role of chair in March 2024.

CWCI is a nonprofit organization composed of insurers licensed to write workers’ compensation insurance in California, along with public and private self-insured employers. The institute focuses on collecting and analyzing claims data to improve benefit delivery to injured workers, identifying systemwide trends and address issues relevant to its members and policymakers.

Along with Hansen’s re-election, CWCI announced its 2025 executive committee members, which include Kris Mathis of CopperPoint Insurance Companies a vice chair, Michael Cunningham of Zenith Insurance Company, Amanda Granger of ICW Group Insurance Companies, Carmen Sharp of The Hanover Insurance Group, Vernon Steiner of State Compensation Insurance Fund, and Matthew Zender of AmTrust North America. The institute also welcomed several new members to its 2025 board of directors, representing a range of organizations within the workers’ compensation industry.

Hansen’s leadership will be focused on developing risk assessment strategies, pricing models, and underwriting standards aimed at supporting market stability and regulatory compliance, while meeting the needs of both employers and injured workers, it was stated.

In April 2025, CWCI held its 61st Annual Meeting in Sacramento under the theme “The Past Is Preview”, which examined how changes made to California’s workers’ compensation system over the past 25 years have contributed to stability and set a foundation for the future. The meeting featured presentations on the state economy, upcoming CWCI research, and discussions of legal and political challenges facing the industry.

Looking ahead, CWCI is preparing for its 27th Case Law Seminar scheduled for September 9, 2025, which will be broadcast live online.
