Two public hearings on the proposed amendments to insurance contributions by the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) for 2019-2021 will be heard this week.

Announced last December, both hearings will be held and reviewed by the Panel of Experts on Automobile Insurance Contributions. The panel was created by the provincial government and is comprised of members representing the actuarial, financial and insurance sectors.

SAAQ submitted its proposal for setting insurance contributions in 2019-2021 late last year, calling for a general increase in insurance contributions among license holders, regardless of the number of their demerit points.

The insurance board also revealed in its proposal that it recognizes the merit of rewarding good driving behaviour, and has recommended the province draw inspiration from other regions that have implemented systems that offer reduced premiums to safe drivers.

The first day of public hearings will be held in Montréal tomorrow, in the Jasmin Room at the Holiday Inn Montréal Centreville Downtown. In tomorrow’s hearing, the Panel will hear from two groups – the Association du transport urbain du Québec (ATUQ) and the Front commun motocycliste.

March 22 is the date of the second hearing, to be held in Québec at the Fontainebleau Room at the Palace Royal. On that day, the Panel will hear from CAA-Québec.
