Wawanesa has launched a new app-based telematics program to improve road safety and reward responsible driving habits.

The Drive Change program offer a wide range of incentives, including an automatic 10% discount upon enrollment and renewal discounts of up to 25% based on driving behaviour.

The program monitors driving information through a smartphone application and is currently available across Ontario for private personal auto.

“Our Drive Change app is all about member safety and affordability,” said Anna McCrindell, SVP and chief operations officer – East. “We want to help our members become more aware of their driving habits and incent them to be safer, so everyone in our communities can enjoy safer streets.”

Wawanesa’s new usage-based insurance offering also rewards drivers with points for not using the phone while driving, which customers can redeem as gift cards at various retailers.

The program also honours prior telematics discounts from other carriers, offering potential savings of up to 20%.

“Drive Change is the first program of its kind to honour prior carrier discounts and reward safe driving through a points system, in addition to the potential premium savings,” said Tracy Riley, Wawanesa’s SVP & chief technology officer.

“As a mutual insurance company, it was important to us to make sure we were bringing meaningful cost savings to our members, as well as improving the safety and wellbeing of our broader communities.”

The Drive Change program is available to Ontario residents through Wawanesa’s extensive network of independent insurance brokers.

In other news, Wawanesa transitioned from a self-managed, on-premise deployment model by utilizing Guidewire Cloud to deliver better service to brokers and members, strengthen its core business operations, and simplify IT functions.
