Chubb has made a couple of key appointments in its North American commercial insurance segment to accommodate the retirement of a senior executive.

The company has named Paul Lewis its newest North America commercial insurance industry practice leader for Chubb’s North American mid-market segment. Lewis succeeds Jim West, who retires after a 38-year career with the company.

As industry practice leader, Lewis will be responsible for leading Chubb’s commercial insurance industry practices in both the US and Canada. He will also have oversight of commercial insurance marketing in the region, a release said, and will report to Chubb Group division president of North America commercial insurance Scott Gunter.

To fill in Lewis’s previous role as North America commercial insurance chief underwriting officer, Chubb has tapped Ben Rockwell, the current commercial primary casualty manager. In his new role, Rockwell will administer the business lines’ underwriting strategies, authority, and general underwriting management. He will also report to division president Gunter.

Lewis has over 36 years of industry experience – 32 of those years were spent with Chubb. He has held a number of field and home office management roles. He was most recently chief underwriting officer of Chubb’s North America region – a role he had served since 2016. Prior to this, he was chief underwriting officer for Chubb’s personal insurance business.

Rockwell joined Chubb in 1997 initially as a casualty claims representative in Chicago. In 1999, he joined the company’s casualty department as an underwriter. He then held a series of field and home office underwriting positions, including commercial underwriting manager, multi-line executive field underwriter, excess casualty manager, and most recently, commercial insurance primary casualty leader for North America.
