Insurance Business Canada recently unveiled its Elite Women for 2023, recognized the outstanding achievements of women in the insurance sector.

A panel of esteemed judges handpicked 55 women across Canada out of numerous nominations.

Among the award recipients is Christa O'Neil, chief operating officer at McFarlan Rowlands Insurance Brokers, whose work has been focused on paving the way for a new generation of female industry leaders.

O’Neil’s journey in the insurance industry began more than a decade ago when she put her post-secondary education on hold to acquire her broker’s license at a brokerage in her hometown of London, ON.

She described this deviation from her original path as a blessing in disguise that fuelled her motivation to succeed in her career.

O’Neil’s dedication and hard work have led to numerous accomplishments. In 2022, she received the Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario’s (IBAO) Brokerage of the Year award. She has also served as the director of the Insurance Institute of Ontario’s Southwestern chapter, where she actively contributed to the industry by planning symposiums, moderating webinars, and hosting events.

Furthermore, O’Neil’s role as the former operations director of commercial lines at McFarlan Rowlands Insurance Brokers allowed her to lead innovative projects like the BrokerLift platform, as well as successfully integrate three brokerage acquisitions.

Her leadership was also instrumental to the creation of a hybrid work model, enabling a flexible workplace that supports working parents and provides equitable opportunities for women in the insurance industry.

Recognizing the importance of mentorship and empowering other women in insurance, O’Neil has taken on the role of mentor for three operations team members.

“As they learn from me, I learn from them, strengthening us both,” she said. “Those internal female mentorship arrangements are important to develop and shape the next generation of female leaders.”
