Two insurance providers have been recognized as some of Canada’s best employers of older workers.

The editors at Mediacorp Canada have added the insurers Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC) and Desjardins Group to its list of “Top Employers for Canadians Over 40.” The competition is currently in its 18th year.

AFSC, based in Lacombe, Alberta, is a provincial Crown corporation that provides agribusinesses with financial products such as crop insurance, business loans, and farm income disaster assistance. The company was recognized for actively hiring insurance adjusters with an average age of 50 years. AFSC also helps its employees prepare for life after work by providing retirement planning courses, phased-in retirement options and generous contributions to a defined benefit pension plan.

Desjardins Group was the other insurer that made the list. The company helps employees save for retirement through a benefit pension plan, and provides retirement planning assistance. Employees are also given phased-in retirement work options when nearing retirement, which means retired employees continue to receive health benefits without an age restriction.

“There’s a common denominator among employers that have been successful in creating exceptional workplaces,” commented Canada’s Top 100 Employers managing editor Richard Yerema. “Employers that understand how to retain and attract experienced staff become the places where exceptional employees from other organizations want to work.”
