The Insurance Institute of Canada has elected London Bradley, president and chief executive of Allstate Insurance Company of Canada, as chair of its board of governors for 2026-27 - and the timing reflects how much pressure the body is under to move faster on talent and professional development.

Bradley was elected at the Institute’s 73rd annual general meeting on October 27. The Institute is the professional education body for Canada’s P&C industry and awards the Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) and Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional (FCIP) designations.

A retirement wave already under way

The Institute’s own demographic research projected that 8.5% of the P&C workforce would retire within five years, including around 15% of senior management. For brokers, that means a significant share of experienced underwriters, adjusters and account managers leaving in a short window, at the same time as AI is changing what the remaining roles require.

The Institute has responded with its Insurance Careers Platform, launched in April, and initiatives such as Insurance Take Our Kids to Work Day on November 4, aimed at Grade 9 students. But updating designations and reaching new entrants quickly enough remains the central challenge.

Bradley’s background

Bradley has led Allstate Canada since May 2022, overseeing its subsidiaries Pembridge Insurance, Pafco Insurance and Ivantage Insurance Brokers. He joined the Allstate Corporation in 1998 as an exclusive agent in the US Midwest, moved into sales leadership in 2001, and held senior distribution roles before coming to Canada. He also sits on the board of the Insurance Bureau of Canada.

Peter Hohman, the Institute’s president and chief executive, said Bradley’s expertise would help it continue raising standards and equip professionals for an increasingly complex environment.

“As the industry continues to evolve, the Insurance Institute remains instrumental in developing the expertise, critical thinking, and leadership that enables insurance professionals to make a meaningful difference in the lives and businesses of our customers,” Bradley said.

What brokers need from the Institute

For brokerage owners and principals, the Institute’s direction over the next year matters in practical terms. Firms competing for entry-level and mid-career talent need designations that are recognised by employers and understood by recruits, and they need pathways that work for people entering from outside the industry.

Bradley’s background in sales and distribution, across both exclusive agent and broker-distributed channels, gives him a working understanding of how talent flows through the market. Whether the Institute can move quickly enough on digital delivery and curriculum to keep pace with what employers and new entrants actually need is the question his tenure will have to answer.
