Specialty insurer XL Catlin has announced the appointment of industry veteran Sonja Ochsenkuehn as its new head of global programs.

She will have direct responsibility over XL Catlin’s global program platform, with teams in New York, London, Zurich, Mexico City, Hong Kong, New Delhi and Vienna. Ochsenkuehn will report directly to Philippe Gouraud, XL Catlin’s global head of strategic client & broker management.

“We made the strategic decision to strengthen our team because we recognize our clients’ needs are changing and getting more complex, moving from the traditional risks, such as property and casualty programs, to include political violence and terrorism, supply chain disruption or cyber risks,” said Gouraud.

XL Catlin has described global programs as a “strategic development” area that has seen significant growth in recent years. Last year, “it’s insurance businesses led 70% of the nearly 3,500 global programs it participated in, arranging for over 18,000 local insurance policies to be issued,” said the firm.

Ochsenkuehn previously spent over 15 years at AIG, where she most recently headed knowledge strategy and network guidance. She holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Union College, New York and a Master of Business Administration & Industrial Engineering from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany.

In May, XL Catlin made another international appointment with the promotion of Rob McAdams to the position of chief underwriting officer for global marine. Previously, he was marine leader for UK and Ireland.

McAdams has 20 years’ experience in insurance, having held various posts at Reliance National in New York before joining the XL Group. He is also an associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute, as well as a chartered property & casualty underwriter.
