Telematics-based auto insurer Insure the Box has revealed that, in recent years, January 28 has been among the top days for vehicular accidents. Meanwhile, the company’s research also shows that young drivers do not know what to do if an accident were to occur… whether that was today or any other day.

January is the month most prone to car accidents, the company said, with the 15th, 23rd, and 28th being the peak days for Accident Alerts. More worryingly, the insurer’s research showed that only 12% of young drivers aged 17 to 29 knew that they are supposed to stop if they are involved in an accident where the other party incurs injury or damage.

Similarly, only 12% of 17- to 29-year-olds agree that they should share their insurance details with other people, despite 90% of them keeping their insurance details with them in the vehicle.

In the event of a minor accident, only 14% of young drivers know that they should get the name, address, and insurance details of the other party before leaving. Without this information, the claims process could be further complicated.

Accident Alerts are a feature of Insure the Box’s telematics insurance policy, where the installed black box calculates the likelihood of a policyholder needing assistance based on several factors. If a significant G-force is registered, the computer will determine whether the vehicle has encountered an accident. If the insurer is unable to contact the policyholder by phone, then emergency services will be dispatched to the vehicle’s location.

Since its launch in 2009, Insure the Box has received over 100,000 Accident Alerts, while emergency services have been called out an average of 16 times per month in 2016.

“The insight into driving behaviours collected by our black boxes is helping thousands of young people take control of their own insurance costs and benefit from safer driving,” said Simon Rewell, road safety manager for Insure the Box. “The Accident Alert service is enabling us to get help to those who need it, saving lives in the process.”
