A poll conducted by RDT, a provider of insurance technology solutions, reveals that insurers are preparing for significant changes in traditional roles as automation and digital transformation reshape the industry.

The survey, which gathered insights from technology executives at insurance firms, found that 54% of respondents expect traditional roles, particularly in underwriting and claims, to require enhanced technical skills such as data analysis and machine learning. In response, over 90% of insurers reported investing in training programmes to equip employees with the skills needed to stay competitive in a technology-driven environment.

The findings also highlight the increasing importance of data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI). Eighty per cent (80%) of respondents identified these areas as critical for the future workforce. Other key skills include expertise in digital customer experience and cybersecurity and risk management, each cited by 60% of participants.

Commenting on the findings, Joe O’Connor, deputy chief executive at RDT, said the insurance industry must prepare for a future where technical skills are essential.

“By investing in training and development, insurers are building a workforce equipped for the future – one that is capable of delivering a seamless, digital-first experience for their customers,” he added.

The poll also emphasised a strong focus on customer-centred digital tools, with 91% of respondents confirming ongoing investments in staff unskilling. While technical capabilities are prioritised, respondents noted the importance of customer expertise to fully realise the benefits of digital advancements.

The results indicate a strategic shift within the insurance sector as it prepares for a digital-first future, balancing technical innovation with customer-centric approaches.
