Global specialty (re)insurer Canopius Group has announced the appointment of Philip Weston as casualty treaty underwriter.

In his new role, Weston will report to Paul Western, head of US casualty treaty.

Weston has 30 years of London market experience in both international and North American casualty treaty reinsurance business. Prior to joining Canopius, he spent more than two decades at Faraday Syndicate, where he most recently served as head of international casualty.

“Philip joins at a critical juncture in Canopius’ growth, as we continue to scale our casualty reinsurance offering,” Western said. “His skill set and extensive network of relationships, grown over a successful 30-year career in the London Market, complement those of our existing team. I am looking forward to working with Philip and welcoming him to the team, which will allow us to access more opportunities and expand our capabilities in the market.”

“Canopius is a business I have always respected,” Weston said. “I was drawn by the entrepreneurialism of the management team, which is clear from the impressive growth of their book over multiple platforms in recent years, and the opportunity to build the international casualty treaty book and work alongside Paul, who is highly respected in our market.”

Weston’s hiring comes on the heels of last month’s appointment of Sam Harrison as Canopius Group’s chief underwriting officer. The company also recently bolstered its professional lines capabilities in the US and Bermuda with the appointments of Mike Butler and Jade Weaver.
