Global insurance broker Howden has designated Miami as the headquarters for its Americas commercial insurance broking business. The move marks roughly one year since Howden launched its US retail broking operation, and signals the city's growing role as a center for international insurance firms targeting the Americas.
Since its 2025 launch, Howden has built more than 20 industry-specific broking teams across the country. It has also added private capital, employee health and benefits, and private client groups to its US platform. The company now counts more than 1,300 employees and 3,000 clients in the United States. Its book spans middle market to large enterprise companies.
Mike Parrish, CEO of Howden Americas, said Miami's global connectivity drove the choice. "Miami is one of the world's most connected business communities and an increasingly important location for companies operating across the Americas," Parrish said. "We're thrilled to be the only global broker based here."
Howden is not alone in that assessment. Lloyd's of London and Allianz Commercial both established Miami hubs in recent years to centralize their Latin America and Caribbean operations. The city has become a convergence point for international insurers and reinsurers targeting the region.
The headquarters designation also reflects the scale of Howden's Latin America and Caribbean operations. That business has grown to more than 1,000 employees across 12 offices in five countries: Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, and Chile.
Sonia Caamaño, CEO of Latin America and the Caribbean at Howden, said the Miami base would bring both sides of the business closer together. "Miami has always been the natural hub for business flowing between the US and Latin America, and now our team has a home right at the center of it," Caamaño said. "This will mean even closer collaboration with clients and carriers whose business spans the region and a direct line into the US market."
Latin America's insurance market reached $213 billion in gross written premiums in 2024, according to McKinsey's Global Insurance Report 2025, which found that the region's premiums grew at an 11% compound annual rate from 2019 to 2024. That share remains just 3% of the global insurance market, a gap that has drawn sustained interest from international brokers.
Miami's role in Howden's strategy extends beyond its commercial footprint. In its first year in the city, the company directed approximately $400,000 to Miami-area nonprofit and community organizations.
Parrish said the city holds significance beyond its geography. "Miami is more than our headquarters, it's our home," he said. "We'll show up here with the same energy and dedication we bring to our clients and colleagues."
Howden operates across more than 50 countries and employs over 20,000 people globally. Its Americas buildout is one of the more active expansions by an international broker in the U.S. market in recent years.
