The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) – the provincial Crown corporation handling auto insurance, driver licensing, and vehicle registration in BC – has announced that customers renewing or applying either for driver’s licenses, BCIDs, and/or BC Services Cards will start receiving new cards with “some minor changes.”

According to the company, it has partnered with a new service provider for card production that is “focused on supporting ICBC's direction of providing affordable and secure provincial cards that benefit all British Columbians,” a statement on ICBC’s website said.

The new cards, which are already being issued, will appear similar to the previous ones, but with some design changes which ICBC says are for card security.

ICBC offered a reminder that existing cards will remain valid until their expiry date. The company has also advised that customers do not need to apply for a new card before the expiry date, unless their cards are lost, stolen, or damaged.

In another statement, the Crown corporation has released a notice that in 2023 it is expected to run out of driver’s license numbers (DLN). To accommodate newer drivers, the corporation will increase DLNs from seven digits to eight.
