Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI), the Crown corporation which handles the province’s basic auto insurance system and driver licensing, has announced that it will resume booking new road tests.

Specifically, it will resume booking new tests for Class 2 to 6 licenses. The insurer resumed tests for Class 1 licenses (which allow holders to drive semis) last month.

According to the insurer, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of about 4,300 road tests for Class 2 to 6 licensing, which left the company with a huge backlog. MPI has followed up with those who had previously booked, and those whose tests have been cancelled can still reschedule.

In a statement released yesterday, MPI said that it is anticipating a surge in road test appointments, particularly for Class 5 licenses – which allow holders to drive cars, SUVs, vans and pick-up trucks.

CBC News reported that MPI will release additional appointment slots every Wednesday morning until it can clear its backlog.

Drivers have been urged to book their appointment online. All drivers have also been asked to observe COVID-19 safety rules for road tests, which include bringing and wearing their own masks, as well as sanitizing all touchpoints of their vehicle.
