Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) has issued a notice warning its customers not to respond to or click on any links in a text message which claims to be about missed insurance payments.

According to the Crown corporation, a dubious text claiming to be from MPI has been making the rounds, which states that the customer supposedly missed a payment. The text also recommends that customers click a link provided in the message to complete a payment transaction.

“This message is not from MPI – the corporation does not conduct business regarding payments in this manner,” the insurer said in a release.

MPI has recommended that customers receiving such texts not respond to the message in any way, nor should they click any links. Those customers who have concerns about their account or payments have been advised to either reach out to their Autopac agent or MPI’s Contact Centre.

News of the text scam comes as MPI applied for an average rate decrease of 0.9% this year – its fourth straight year of requesting an average rate decrease. The insurer has also submitted a provincial request to extend its safety rating system, from 16 levels to 17. The request is provisional, and rates could be adjusted ahead of the Public Utilities Board’s hearing in October.
