When motorists become involved in collisions or other automobile incidents, several questions inevitably arise, ranging from inquiring about who is liable, determining whether to contact the police and investigating how a total loss is established.

For many Canadians, it can be difficult to find guidance during this tumultuous period – in fact, these questions constituted almost 25% of auto insurance calls made to the Insurance Information Center (IIC) in 2014.

As a result, Groupement des assureurs automobiles (GAA) has released a new online tool that will provide a comprehensive resource to drivers who need to file an auto insurance claim.

The “Auto claims settlement tool” provides Quebecers with a user-friendly way of obtaining information on a variety of automobile queries, including damage appraisal, repairs, claim filing, and theft.

"We realized this topic was of great interest to drivers who call IIC. More specifically, the questions about claims settlement involved the Direct Compensation Agreement, damage appraisal and the Fichier central des sinistres automobiles, a database that tracks losses. Our tool addresses and explains these three topics," Line Crevier, Supervisor, Technical Affairs and Insurance information Centre at GAA, said in a statement.

In 2013, consumers in Quebec filed more than 600,000 auto claims.  This new tool supports the GAA’s mission in helping drivers complete the claims settlement process as quickly and painlessly as possible.

“The online auto claims settlement tool perfectly underpins GAA’s mandate to support and inform consumers about auto insurance,” Crevier said.
