Toronto-based ARAG Legal Solutions Inc., part of the ARAG Group, has announced the appointment of Peter Dempster (pictured above) as its new chief executive officer, effective May 1.

Dempster joins ARAG from AON Canada, where he worked as managing director and market leader, for the Central Region. He has over 12 years of insurance industry experience and previously practised as a lawyer in Toronto and Vancouver after receiving his LL.B. from Queen’s University, Kingston.

“I’m glad to welcome Peter to our team and I’m looking very much forward to jointly writing the next chapter of our Canadian success story,” said Renko Dirksen, chairman of the board of directors of ARAG Legal Solutions Inc. and speaker of the board of management of ARAG SE. “With his broad knowledge and deep insurance industry expertise, we’ll seize the opportunities the Canadian market is offering.”

Dempster assumes his new role from Barbara Haynes, who is set to retire on June 30 after a decades-long career in insurance. Haynes will remain a member of the board of directors of ARAG Legal Solutions Inc. She will also support Dempster in the transition of key market relationships, particularly during his first year as CEO.

“Barbara did a tremendous job in the past years, and we are glad she’ll support ARAG as a member of the board of directors in the future as well,” Dirksen added.

ARAG Services Corporation was incorporated in 2015 and officially launched in 2016 in Canada as an insurance intermediary, a press release noted. It later amalgamated with ARAG Legal Solutions Inc. in January 2022, driven by ARAG Group’s acquisition of DAS Legal Protection in March 2021.

ARAG Legal Solutions Inc. is now hailed as Canada’s market leader in legal expense insurance, with premiums under management amounting to CA$41 million as of year-end 2022.
