Aviva’s Community Fund has reached its ninth year - and this year the insurer has added a new category to the online community funding competition.

The new category is called Community Legacy. It will have a $150,000 prize, in addition to the usual $1 million from Aviva Community Fund. The category is open to current or aspiring social entrepreneurs aged 18 to 25. To win, participants must submit an original solution to address the consequences of climate change.

"We've awarded $7.5 million to over 250 charities since 2009, and we intend to continue our commitment to communities across Canada,” said Aviva Canada senior vice-president of Customer and Marketing Debora Hendrickson. “This is a special year for Canada, so we're encouraging young social entrepreneurs to present their innovative idea that benefits the environment and help leave a positive legacy for the next 150 years. We can't wait to see the ideas for this year's competition."

Tessica Truong, a social entrepreneur who was named one of the 2016 Top 25 Environmentalists Under 25, commented: "This new Community Legacy category is a great way for you to be innovative, to be really creative and to think boldly about what you can do. To tackle an issue like climate change is so critical to our country and to the world.  Why not go for it?"

The Aviva Community Fund will be open for submissions on September 13.
