Nova Scotia has been so dry this summer there are wildfires in the western part of the province – and now much of the mainland is expected to deal with a downpour.

Environment Canada has issued a weather statement for most of mainland Nova Scotia, warning that a “low pressure system approaching from the great lakes” will push rain – “at times heavy” – into the province tonight and Wednesday.

According to Environment Canada, much of the mainland is expected to get 20 to 30 millimetres of rain, with rainfall exceeding 50 millimetres in some areas.

The expected downpour has its upside – the dryness of the past few weeks has led to four wildfire outbreaks. All four are still 100% contained, according to a report by the Yarmouth County Vanguard.

The dryness has led to travel restrictions across mainland Nova Scotia, and most of those remain in effect despite the forecast for rain, according to the Vanguard. Residents are being asked to avoid any activity that has the potential to cause fires. The province did lift travel restrictions for Cape Breton Monday, as the area isn’t as dry as the rest of the province, according to the Vanguard.
