Brokers spoke out in great numbers and with vigour on Mike O’Grady’s take on the state of insurance today.

The article, ‘I say things people don’t want to hear’ elicited over a dozen comments from brokers, who agreed and disagreed on what the Ontario broker had to say.

Here is a sample of some of the comments:

I believe even with today's technology that a face to face is still very achievable for some clients. It's up to the brokerage and broker to continue to give our clients that type of service.

Online sites, quoting systems etc are all tools and should be used as such, but there should always be a personal touch. Today's clients do want the quick and cheap quote, but it's up to us to personalize it when we talk to them on the phone.

With the population getting larger, it's tough to make a face to face call on all personal lines, but should still be done on all Commercial Lines policies and that shouldn't change regardless of technology.

Don't fight technology, embrace it and use your personal touch to interact with clients.

Mike O'Grady I have been in the insurance business for over 20 years and I agree with you 100 per cent. I really enjoy having my client sitting with me face-to-face at my office doing business.

Thank you Mike for such an inspiring article. I have worked in a call centre, I know the difference.

At IBMG Canada Inc., we do believe in technology and we have all the tools we need to make our lives easy. However, we meet our clients in person before binding a policy and also we call them and speak to them at least once a year. (continued.)

If there is a large claim, we personally meet them and help them mitigate the loss and make sure they are being looked after.

Over 95 per cent of my clients know me face-to-face and when you have that kind of relationship not only do they stay with you for a longer period of time, but also they refer many clients and it is the best way to grow your book of business.

Mr. O’Grady is correct when he calls ‘technology’ (the Internet) a ‘tool.’

Blind reliance on technology as a solution to all problems or the key to success is doomed to be a futile exercise. Just trying to copy or adopt something that one has heard or read about can be categorized as a gamble.

As with every sort of change or new application, proper research, planning, staffing and implementation must be done.
